Market Overview

Ghana has emerged as one of West Africa's strongest used excavator import markets. Driven by Ghana's position as Africa's second-largest gold producer (after South Africa), ongoing road construction across the cocoa belt and major cities, and steady real estate development in Accra and Kumasi. The market is particularly active in the 20-35 ton class — Cat 320/330, Komatsu PC200/PC300, Hitachi ZX200/ZX350.

Gold mining in the Ashanti Region (Obuasi, Kenyasi), Western Region (Tarkwa, Prestea), and emerging artisanal-formalized operations across the country generates strong demand for medium and large excavators. Mining operators favor Caterpillar and Komatsu for proven local parts support, with growing acceptance of Sany and XCMG for cost-sensitive projects.

Documentation: GSA (Ghana Standards Authority) Conformity Certificate is required for imports, issued at origin by accredited bodies (SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas). UCR number must be declared in advance through the importer's bank. We coordinate the GSA process at standard cost — typically $500-700 for the 20-ton class.

Tema Port (near Accra) handles 80%+ of Ghana's imports including all major machinery. Takoradi serves Western Region mining destinations and saves significant trucking distance for Tarkwa-area buyers. Both ports offer modern container handling and RoRo capability.

Frequently Asked Questions — Ghana

How does Ghana customs compare to Nigeria? +

Ghana customs is generally more predictable and faster than Nigeria. With complete documentation (GSA, UCR, B/L, CI, PL, CO), Tema clearance typically completes in 5-10 days. Ghana also has lower informal-payment requirements compared to other West African markets.

Tema or Takoradi for mining destinations? +

For Tarkwa, Damang, Iduapriem, or any Western Region mining site, Takoradi saves 200-300 km of trucking versus Tema. Tema is preferred for everything else including Kumasi and Northern Region.

What is the import duty in Ghana? +

Used construction machinery: typically 5% duty + 12.5% VAT + 2.5% NHIL + 0.5% GETFund Levy + 1% Special Import Levy. Plan for total taxes around 22-25% of CIF value. Final duty calculation by your Ghanaian customs broker.

Is LC payment common for Ghana? +

Both LC at sight and 30/70 TT are widely used. Ghanaian banks process USD allocation more smoothly than Nigerian banks, so TT is the default for most transactions.
