How do you verify the engine condition?
ExcaYard verifies engine condition through a 150-point pre-shipment inspection that includes visual checks, fluid analysis, electronic diagnostics, and a documented cold-start and load test. Every finding is captured with photos and video so you can review the evidence before shipment. This guide explains exactly what we check, how we document it, and what it means for your purchase.
Why Engine Verification Matters on a Used Excavator
The engine is the highest-value component in any pre-owned excavator. On a used Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hitachi, Volvo, Doosan, Hyundai, Kobelco, Sany, XCMG, SDLG, LiuGong, or Sunward machine, the engine's condition directly affects reliability, fuel consumption, and total cost of ownership. Because ExcaYard sources machines from multiple channels across China, we treat engine verification as a non-negotiable step before any unit is offered for export. Our inspection is designed to surface issues early, so you are not surprised by a rebuild or replacement after the machine arrives in Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, or the CIS.
What the 150-Point Inspection Covers for the Engine
The engine portion of our 150-point inspection is both mechanical and documentary. It includes:
- Cold-start test: We observe starting behaviour from ambient temperature, noting cranking time, exhaust colour, and any abnormal noises.
- Idle and high-idle stability: We check for misfires, hunting, or excessive vibration across the RPM range.
- Load test: Where site conditions allow, we operate the machine under load to confirm power delivery and response.
- Fluid checks: Engine oil level, colour, and contamination; coolant condition; and evidence of leaks around the block, head, and turbo.
- Electronic diagnostics: Where the machine supports it, we read fault codes and live data to cross-check sensor readings and hours.
- Hours verification: We compare the hour meter reading against service records, wear patterns, and paint-thickness checks on surrounding panels.
- Visual inspection: Belts, hoses, mounts, injectors, turbocharger, exhaust, and wiring harnesses are examined for wear or tampering.
Each step is recorded with photos and video, and the resulting report is shared with you before you commit to shipping. If you want to see how this fits into the wider machine check, our undercarriage inspection guide explains the parallel process for the undercarriage.
How We Document Engine Condition
Documentation is what turns an inspection into a decision tool. For every engine, ExcaYard provides:
- Time-stamped photos of the engine bay, dipstick, coolant, and exhaust.
- Video of the cold start, idle, and load test.
- A written summary of any fault codes, leaks, or abnormal sounds.
- Hour-meter photos and, where available, service history notes.
This package is shared via WhatsApp or email so you can review it with your own mechanic. We do not issue third-party guarantees or certificates for engine condition; we provide the evidence and let you judge. If a machine does not meet our internal standard, it is not listed for export.
Engine Verification and Export Documentation
Engine condition is separate from the export certifications required by your destination country. ExcaYard handles SONCAP for Nigeria, SABER for Saudi Arabia, PVoC for Kenya, Tanzania, and Ghana, GSA for Ghana, and KEBS where applicable. These certifications confirm conformity for customs, not engine health. The documents we prepare for every shipment include a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, and certificate of origin. If you are shipping to Tanzania, our Doosan to Tanzania guide outlines the process; for Brazil, see the Volvo to Brazil guide.
Payment, Shipping, and Lead Time
Once you are satisfied with the engine report, we move to commercial terms. Payment is by T/T USD wire, L/C through Bank of China, or Wise. Shipping is arranged FOB or CIF using RoRo, container, or flat-rack, with default ports Shanghai, Ningbo, Qingdao, and Tianjin. Typical CIF lead time is 28-45 days port-to-port. The table below summarises the key factors that affect engine-related risk and cost.
| Factor | What We Check | Buyer Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Cold-start behaviour | Cranking time, exhaust colour, noise | Indicates compression and fuel delivery health |
| Fluid condition | Oil, coolant, leaks | Signals maintenance history and internal wear |
| Electronic fault codes | Stored and live codes | Reveals sensor or injection issues |
| Hours verification | Meter, records, wear patterns | Confirms true usage and remaining life |
| Load test | Power delivery under load | Shows real-world performance |
What We Do Not Claim
ExcaYard does not invent certificates, guarantees, or exact stock numbers. We do not promise a specific remaining engine life. What we provide is a transparent, evidence-based inspection so you can make an informed decision. If you need a third-party inspection, we can accommodate that within the lead time, but it is not part of our standard 150-point report.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see the engine inspection before paying?
Yes. We share photos and video of the cold start, idle, and load test before you commit to payment. You can review them with your own mechanic.
Do you provide a warranty on the engine?
No. ExcaYard does not offer engine warranties. We provide a documented 150-point inspection and let the evidence speak for itself.
How long does the inspection take?
The inspection is completed before shipment. Combined with export certification and shipping, typical CIF lead time is 28-45 days port-to-port.
