Why UAE imports the way it does.
UAE serves a dual role: domestic market with strong construction and infrastructure demand (Etihad Rail, real estate development, Dubai mega-projects), AND as a re-export hub serving Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Iran (where direct shipments are difficult), and East Africa.
Jebel Ali Free Zone is the preferred port for re-export operations — duty-suspended import and re-export with minimal paperwork. For UAE domestic delivery, Khalifa Port (Abu Dhabi) is increasingly preferred.
No special licenses required for used machinery imports to UAE. Customs clearance at Jebel Ali typically completes within 3-7 days for standard shipments. ESMA conformity certificate may be required for non-free-zone direct imports.
