Why Indonesia imports the way it does.
Indonesia is the largest excavator market in Southeast Asia, with demand spanning multiple sectors: nickel mining in Sulawesi (driven by EV battery demand), coal mining in Kalimantan, palm oil estates in Sumatra and Kalimantan, and the construction de the new capital Nusantara in East Kalimantan.
The 20-30 tonelada class dominates demand, with strong specific preference for Komatsu PC200/PC300 series. Kobelco SK200 and Hitachi ZX200 are also popular. Chinese brands (Sany SY215, XCMG XE215) are gaining share in cost-sensitive segments.
Importer must hold API-U (general importer license). Customs clearance through Tanjung Priok takes 7-14 days with standard documentation. For mining destinations in Kalimantan or Sulawesi, Surabaya or Makassar may be preferable ports.
