Over 95% of excavators sold globally are crawler-type. The advantages are decisive: lower ground pressure spreads weight across the entire track footprint (vital on soft soil or mud), better stability when slewing under heavy load, and the ability to climb grades that would defeat wheeled machines.
The trade-off is mobility between sites: crawlers must be trailered (or self-propelled on slow gear) for any significant distance, while wheeled excavators can drive on public roads. For contractors with multiple sites in a region, this is a key consideration.
Undercarriage condition is the single most important inspection point on any used crawler. Track chains, sprockets, idlers, and rollers wear continuously and replacement of a full undercarriage runs $8,000-25,000 depending on size. Always insist on a detailed undercarriage condition report.

How long does an excavator undercarriage last? +
Typically 6,000-10,000 hours for the chains and sprockets, depending on terrain and operating style. Hard rock and abrasive sand shorten life; soft soil and gravel extend it.
What is the difference between crawler and wheeled excavators? +
Crawler: tracked, better stability and traction, slower between sites. Wheeled: rubber tires, can drive on roads at 25-40 km/h, more popular in Europe for utility work.
