Mining excavators above 50 tons operate in a different world from construction-class machines. Engine outputs of 400-1,500 horsepower, bucket capacities of 3-12 m³, and 24/7 production duty cycles demand purpose-built drivetrains and operator stations that are closer to industrial equipment than to construction excavators.

On the used market, most 50T+ machines come out of producing mines and arrive with extensive service records, heavy field wear, and approaching-mid-life major service requirements. Budget realistically for a $50,000-200,000 refurbishment in addition to purchase price for any unit over 5,000 hours in mining service.

Logistics are specialized: these machines ship as deck cargo (not container, not RoRo) and require crane loading at the port of departure. Plan 60-90 days from purchase to arrival in destination port.

Best For

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a 50T construction excavator and a 50T mining excavator? +

A 50T construction excavator (like Cat 349) is a scaled-up earthmover with versatile boom configurations. A 50T mining machine (like Cat 374) has a face-shovel or backhoe configuration optimized for production digging into a bank face. Drivetrains, operator stations, and undercarriages are also purpose-built for 24/7 mining duty.

Can I run mining excavators on diesel only, or do I need electric? +

Most machines up to 200 tons are diesel-only. Above 200 tons, electric drive (with diesel-generator or tethered to grid) becomes the norm for fuel economy and exhaust management in deep pits.
