The 35-ton class is the sweet spot for hard-rock quarry and mining-support work. Bucket capacities of 1.4-2.0 m³ deliver real production rates, while operating weights stay manageable for road transport between sites.

At 50 tons you cross into specialty territory — pure mining, large-scale earthmoving, deep foundation work. Machines in this class are typically configured with heavy-duty (HD) or H-spec undercarriages and reinforced booms. Always check for the H designation when buying in this class.

Logistics matter: machines above 35 tons typically require RoRo shipping (cargo ship with drive-on/drive-off loading) rather than container. RoRo adds about $1,500-3,000 to shipping cost versus container but is mandatory above ~38 tons.

Best For

  • Heavy construction
  • Quarry operations
  • Mining support
  • Mass excavation
  • Deep foundation
  • Hard-rock work
  • Port & dredging support

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the H or HD designation on large excavators? +

H or HD denotes Heavy Duty — reinforced boom, arm, and undercarriage for hard-rock and mining applications. These variants cost 10-20% more new and retain that premium on the used market.

Container or RoRo for a 35 ton excavator? +

Container is possible up to about 35 tons with boom and arm removed (40HQ), but RoRo is typically simpler and only slightly more expensive. Above 38 tons RoRo is the only practical option.
